Wirsol breaks sweat in Caribbean

Germany-based Wirsol has kicked off construction of the 65.14MW Monte Plata solar array in the Dominican Republic.

The scheme in the province of Monte Plata is the first PV project in the country and will also be the largest in the Caribbean.

Wirsol aims to complete the first 32.14MW phase (pictured) and link it to the grid by year-end.

“Due to our many years of experience both the local population and the Dominican government have significant trust in us,” said Wirsol board member Markus Wirth.

“President Danilo Medina Sánchez has personally awarded the country’s first power purchase agreement to us.”

Irradiation in the Caribbean is about 50% higher than in Germany and solar is being targeted as a way of addressing the Dominican Republic’s reliance on fossil fuels.

“The government provides indirect support for projects with renewable energies through a favourable tax treatment,” said Frank Bencosme, the Dominican Republic’s consul in Madrid.
