Danish manufacturer Vestas has won a supply-only deal for turbines at the 49.5MW Larimar wind farm in the Dominican Republic.

The contract with Spain-based Grupo Cobra covers 15 V112 3.3MW machines with deliveries to the project site in Enriquillo expected in the second quarter of 2015 and commissioned by the first quarter of 2016.

Once completed, Larimar will produce approximately 227,000MWh per year and is being developed under a strategy by the Dominican Republic to reduce its dependence on fossil-fuel imports to generate electricity.

In 2011, Vestas installed the first large-scale wind power plant, Juancho Los Cocos, in the country. The Larimar deal is the second contract the company has inked with Grupo Cobra since September.

Grupo Cobra executive director Pedro Cuevas said: “We are delighted to have strengthened our partnership with Vestas through this new deal. We expect the Larimar wind power plant to take wind energy a step further in this country.”

Vestas president for the Mediterranean Marco Graziano added: “We welcome this new order from Grupo Cobra, which enables us to further consolidate our presence in the Dominican Republic.”
