(CLOSED) Vacancy|| ICENS: Research Scientist

ICENS is seeking a person at the Ph D level or equivalent for appointment in the Research Scientst grade: Salary in the range $2, 044,101- $2, 442, 756 (Bar)- $3,003, 597 (plus allowances).

ICENS is an interdisciplinary institute affiliated to the University of the West Indies and resident on the Mona Campus. Its main research at this time is elemental analysis in the chain: soils -> food ->people.

ICENS has powerful state of the art analytical equipment and capabilities including a SLOWPOKE 2 nuclear reactor  computer facilities and a powerful Geographic Information System (GIS). Its mission is the advancement and application of science and technology to the solution of social and economic development problems of Jamaica.

The person should be an experiences analytical chemist familiar with: (a) a range of spectroscopy-based instrumentation, especially atomic absorption and emission equipment; (b)be interested in the application of these and other analytical methods including neutron activation analysis to research in environmental geochemistry and health; and (c) aspire to the management of a small but sophisticates analytical laboratory. Some familiarity with, and interest in, ICPMS would be an advantage for the future.

The successful applicant is expected to assist mainly in:  (a) analysis of trace elements, (b) improving the management systems for large numbers of samples and interpreting analytical results; (c) staff development and management of sample collection and sample preparation; (d) aspects of public information; (e) coordination of research collaborators; (f) aspects of project preparation. Publications are expected.
