UN helps Jamaica tackle energy challenges

The United Nations ‘Sustainable Energy for All’ initiative is to boost efforts by the government to tackle the country’s energy challenges.

Under a programme that will be officially launched on July 31, Jamaica will get support to provide universal access to electricity, enhance energy efficiency, and to increase the share of renewables in the local energy mix.

State Minister in the ministry responsible for energy, Julian Robinson made the announcement during a press conference held yesterday at his office.

Mr Robinson welcomed the assistance from the UN, saying tackling the country’s energy crisis remains one of the main focus of the government. He says solving the country’s energy problems will trigger the growth and development of many other sectors, including those stymied by high energy costs.

Deputy UNDP Resident Representative in Jamaica, Akiko Fujii says the initiative will also help Jamaica realise the kind of development everyone wants to see in the future.
