UB Belmopan Gets thoroughly Modern Solar Array

The University of Belize has the largest most modern array of solar energy panels in Belize.

The agreement for a cooperation project with the Japanese Government was signed two years ago, construction started last year – and the impressive grid was declared open on Friday.

It is a 450 kilowatt system designed to introduce clean energy to Belize by solar power.

The non-resident Japanese Ambassador explained its technological pre-eminence.

H.E. Ambassador Hiroshi Yamaguchi, Ambassador of Japan to Belize
“The Government of Japan is honored to call you pioneer partners in the process of promoting the most advance solar energy system of the world here in Belize.”

Hon. Godwin Hulse, Minister of Local Government
“On the technical side, it introduces Belize to an alternative renewable energy source and ultimately should contribute to a reduction in the country’s energy bill. Dependency on fuels and the primary means of electricity generation whether generated locally or imported from our neighboring Mexico is no longer a very promising option.”

“Our delivery of electricity to households and industry from our hydro and co-generation project using bagasse sources puts us well on our way to achieving this target of energy sustainability.”

According to information given to us last year, the power generated by the PV system will be sold to BEL and the proceeds from such sales will be transferred by way of a grant to UB.
