Trinidad’s energy industry is facing ‘serious challenges’

The Trinidad and Tobago energy industry is facing serious challenges and the onus is on the population to help find answers to the challenges, Energy Minister Carolyn Seepersad-Bachan said earlier this week.

Speaking at the launch in San Fernando of a national consultation on energy policy, she said: “We are faced with falling reserves, more competition on the world markets and significantly increasing costs matched by increasingly scarce financial resources.”

The consultation was held at the San Fernando City Corporation. She said the only way forward was to devise an energy policy that included diversification and a more sustainable way of using scarce resources.

She said that after 100 years of oil production in Trinidad, there was still no single document to guide the development of the industry.

“I have found it very unfortunate that with all this history, we still do not have a single document, or a repository of information on where we came from, and where we as a nation intend to go.”
