APPLICATION: Electricity Production

DESCRIPTION:  Tidal power utilizes the daily variation in sea level caused by the gravitational effect of the Moon and the Sun as well as the Earth’s rotational effects on the oceans. The generation of electricity from tides is very similar to that of hydroelectric generation, except that water is able to flow in both directions and this must be taken into account in the development of the generators. Tidal systems involve erecting a dam across the opening to a tidal basin or estuary. The dam includes a sluice gate that is opened to allow the tide to flow into the basin; the sluice is then closed, and as the sea level drops. Electricity can be generated by water flowing both into and out of the estuary. Traditional hydropower technologies can be used to generate electricity from the elevated water in the basin.
