Sustainable Energy Agenda For Saint Lucia

Climate change is no longer knocking on Saint Lucia’s door.  It has found itself more of a reality, quicker than anyone could have anticipated.  In order to battle the effects of climate change head-on, the government will unveil a sustainable energy agenda.

Ahead of the Budget Debate on Thursday April 25th and Friday April 26th, the Governor General, Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy, announced that traditional means of energy have to be abandoned in order to minimize the disastrous effects on the world population.

She says Saint Lucia needs to mitigate the impacts of climate change where practicable and adapt where necessary.

“Caribbean states are all seeking ways to maximize the opportunities presented by renewable energy and energy efficiency, not just because this is good for the environment, but because it makes good economic sense to reduce our need to import barrels of expensive oil when we can put to good use the sun over our heads, the currents in our oceans, the winds that blow across our land and the heat in our volcano.”

Government intends to pave the way in creating the environment to make investment in renewable energy attractive to companies large and small and also to the average Saint Lucian.

“We will this year implement major initiatives in introducing renewable energy use in public buildings, while extending our programme to replace energy-hungry, high pressure sodium street light bulbs with longer-lasting, energy-efficient LED bulbs.  We will also promote the use of renewable energy in the agricultural sector through the use of bio-gas digesters and solar dryers.”

In the interest of economic growth, government has decided to take a proactive stance to climate change.
