St. Lucia Promotes Renewable Energy Use

The Government of St. Lucia is developing a program to promote renewable energies in order to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change, announced Governor General Pearlette Louisy.

In addition to the environmental benefits, the initiative aims to reduce the economic costs of oil imports by using easily accessible alternatives such as solar, ocean currents, wind force and geothermal energy, she said.

The program helps facilitate private investment and among other things, projects employment of so-called green energy in street lighting and the agricultural sector, the latter through biogas digesters and solar panels, said Louisy.

During 2012, the use of clean energy sources was an important part of the agenda of the Caribbean Community, experiencing growing alarm over pollution from fossil fuels and elevated dependence on imported oil.
