St. Kitts and Nevis look to Renewable Energy for future use

The launch of Energy Week took place yesterday Monday 7th November with a special ceremony hosted at the Ocean Terrace Inn.

While speaking at the event, Nevis’ Energy Minister, Carlisle Powell indicated that as a non-oil producing federation we have to explore new opportunities for the generation of power.

Minister Powell explained that “with the running out of fossil fuels globally and the on-going violence in the Middle East we will continue to see volatility in oil prices and here in the federation it is necessary therefore have to change our policy stance to ensure we have a reliable sustainable source of energy and a secure economic future.”

Mr Powell also went on to state that here in St. Kitts and Nevis our energy has to be Diversified and that the Nevis Island Administration with a wind farm already completed and Geo thermal developments already underway is looking to make Nevis  100% Green in the not too distant future.

“St. Kitts and Nevis has an abundance of resources for renewable energy such as wind geothermal and solar and bio mas,” Minister Powell said.

He also went on to state that Nevisians have already saved two million dollars in electricity since the development of the wind farm and that it is projected that after the geothermal development, the federation will save $30 million in the field of energy.

Mr Powell also announced that after the geothermal plant is established on Nevis that it will provide electricity for the Caribbean, as far as Puerto Rico.

He also said the NIA will continue to work with the Federal Ministry of Energy in finalizing the national energy policy which seeks to the federation become an island nation with a sustainable energy sector that provides economic security.

Energy week is celebrated form 7TH November to 11th November under the theme ‘Sustainable Energy for Economic Security.’
