Saint Lucia, Grenada To Harmonize Energy Policies

energy-utilities-electricity-1GIS Minister for Infrastructure, Ports, Energy and Labour, Hon. Stephenson King led a delegation to the 14th Meeting of the Regional Energy Committee in Grenada.

The committe was formed following the joint launch of the Eastern Caribbean Energy Regulatory Authority (ECERA) Project, by Saint Lucia and Grenada in 2013.

Following the launch, the countries expressed concern regarding the viability of a regional energy regulator with just two countries, and as a result, in January 2016, ECERA participating countries adjusted the project to advance the establishment of national energy regulatory commissions, the National Utilities Regulatory Commission (NURC) in Saint Lucia, and the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission  (PURC) in Grenada.

The regulatory bodies would have direct regulatory oversight of the industry. It was also agreed that the participating countries would harmonize their policies and regulatory frameworks with a view to expanding these in accordance with the original project objectives.

It is anticipated that ECERA, as a non-profit company, will be established and functional by January 2017.

Permanent Secretary in the Department of Infrastructure, Ports and Energy, Allison Jean accompanied Hon. Stephenson King to the Sep. 8. meeting.
