Saint Lucia Gov’t to Implement Renewable Energy Project in 2019

(SNO) — The government will be implementing a renewable energy project this year which it says will save taxpayers a significant amount of money.

The project will be done under the 2nd Cycle of the United Arab Emirates (UAE)-Caribbean Renewable Energy Fund.

A statement from Shannon Lebourne, communications officer at the Ministry of Infrastructure, Ports, Energy and Labour, said a number of projects will be undertaken. They include the construction of a solar carport equipped with electric vehicle charging stations and solar-powered streetlights at the Hewanorra International Airport in Vieux Fort.

On Saturday, January 12, Energy Minister Stephenson King delivered remarks at UAE-Caribbean Renewable Energy Fund 3rd Cycle Launch, a special event at the 9th Session of the Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), in the United Arab Emirates.

Additionally, solar photo-voltaic systems will be installed at two schools on the island, allowing generation of electricity from the sun.

“Saint Lucia is grateful for the support received through the UAE-Caribbean Renewable Energy Fund, as we continue to promote the social and economic development of the island on the foundation of an sustainable energy sector,” Lebourne said in the statement.
