Saint Lucia Begins Early Observance of Energy Awareness Week 2009

St. Lucia commenced activities to mark Energy Awareness Week 2009 by the hosting of a student symposium on Thursday 15th October 2009. Energy Awareness week 2009 will officially be held from the 22nd to the 28th of November under the theme, Combating Climate Change Through Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency .The aim of the annual observance of the week is to promote energy consciousness and education at the national level. A number of activities are scheduled to take place during the actual Energy Awareness Week but to ensure that students were able to participate as effectively as possible, it was important to engage them ahead of time when the school time table was not so hectic. The end of November is usually the time devoted to revision and examinations, which makes it difficult for students to find time for extra activities then.

The symposium was attended by 25 secondary schools from around the island. The objective of the symposium was to expose students to the range of sustainable energy options available to St. Lucia. These included energy sources such as geothermal, wind, solar, biomass, hydro, waste- to -energy and energy efficiency options, Students were able to learn of the various technologies from national experts in the various areas as well as through their independent research. The students also analyzed the environmental and socio-economic impacts of the various options on St. Lucia.

The symposium provided a stimulating and interactive avenue for students to join the global discussions on energy and climate change. Students participated in a mini competition where they chose which sustainable option was the best for assisting St. Lucia in attaining the goal of “Sustainable Energy Demonstration Country”. The winning group clearly and effectively articulated the benefits of “waste to energy” but overall the students were very creative and entertaining in presenting their arguments which included the knowledge gained and their analysis. The symposium was sponsored by CARLIEC, Solar Dynamics St. Lucia Limited, CREDP and the St. Lucia National Council on Public Transport. A number of other activities have been planned for Energy awareness Week 2009 including a national documentary, green symposium and an energy exhibition.
