ROC Supports Alternative Energy Efforts In SKN

The breezes on St. Kitts and Nevis are ideal for the production of wind energy, so says the President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) Ma Ying-jeou.

During a visit to a Solar Plant under construction at St. Kitts RLB Airport on Monday, President Ma appeared so struck by the stiff breezes that were blowing across the site that he departed from his prepared script to comment on the potential for wind energy production.

During his brief address, President Ma praised St. Kitts and Nevis for its efforts to develop green energy and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels, which reining in electricity rates.

A wind farm at Belle Vue on St. Kitts is not yet operational, but the company says it expects to produce 5 megawatts of power.  A wind energy facility in Nevis is generating 2 megawatts of electricity from eight turbines.

St. Kitts and Nevis is first country in the OECS to establish a solar farm.   The 1 megawatt solar facility near the control tower at the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport will provide electricity to the St. Christopher Air and Seaports Authority.   Excess electricity will be converted by the Electricity Company to credit.

The project is a joint venture between the governments of St. Kitts and Nevis and Taiwan, SCASPA, the SIDF and the St. Kitts Electricity Company.

The Taiwanese company SpeedTech which is constructed the plant, has also established factory on the island to produce solar panels for local consumption and export.
