REPORT ON TRANSFER OF ENERGY INFORMATION TO TEACHERS OF ENERGY IN CXC/CAPE AND TEACHER TRAINING COLLEGES

SRC / CEIS together with Dominica Electricity Services (DOMLEC) Limited Workshop on Training Transfer of Energy Information to teachers of Energy in CXC / CAPE Examinations and Community Colleges

DOMINICA

A Teacher Training Workshop was held in Dominica on  June 23, 2009 at the Public Service  Training Centre – Conference Room. This is the continuation of the Energy Information Transfer to Teachers of Energy in CSEC and CAPE series being done throughout the region and was a joint initiative between CEIS, DOMLEC and the Energy Unit of the Ministry of Finance in Grenada. Similar workshops were previously completed in Jamaica, Barbados, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, St Kitts/Nevis and Grenada.

Aim

The purpose of the workshops is to seek to develop greater awareness and understanding of energy issues in the region among teachers, so that they can impart this information to the students sitting the aforementioned examinations.

Specific objectives included:-

  1. Educating the teachers of energy and energy-related subjects in schools and training colleges on matters relating to the high cost of energy and the socio-economic impact.
  1. Providing the teachers of energy and energy-related subjects with the basic information, knowledge and skills required to effectively institute and strengthen energy, energy conservation and efficiency, renewable and sustainable energy as part of the National Science Curriculum.
  2. To, in turn, have the trained teachers pass this information to their students, and to sensitize their colleagues as part of a “Train the Trainer” programme.
  3. Encouraging  the local school community to become more actively involved in energy programmes that are designed to reduce overall energy consumption, as well as decrease the negative impact of fossil fuels in the environment.

Participation

Some 28 participants representing all of the High schools in Dominica as well as the Teachers Training College attended the Workshop. These were mainly  teachers of Physics, Chemistry, Integrated Science and Geography of CSEC and CAPE’s Sustainable Energy Resources section from the High schools.

Presentations

Presentations took the form of modules and were done in Powerpoint format as well as site visits. Six presenters covered topics  including global, regional and national outlook, energy conservation and efficiency, energy and the environment,  energy information sources, electricity generation, solar energy and photovoltaics,  and wind energy technology.

The Workshop was conducted over a one day  period  focusing  on Energy/Energy Conservation and Efficiency/ Environment in the morning and two site visits/lecture tours – one to Marinor Solar Enterprises Ltd and the Hydropower Plant at Trafalgar.

Resource Material

Resource material included shortened outlines of the PowerPoint presentations.  At the end of the workshops, CD ROMs are to be distributed to each participant after the Workshop.

Promotion

The media in Dominica played a positive role by making the information on the Workshop available to the general public. Live ‘on air “sessions were done as well as  various other programs throughout the day. The event was also carried on the local prime time TV news.

There were several articles on the event also in the print media.

Feedback

Teachers were asked to complete feedback questionnaires which were analysed and the results tabulated as follows:
