Report on the St. Stanislaus College Farm RE Project in Guyana

REPORT ON ASSIGNMENT TO GUYANA RE ASSESSMENT OF THE ST. STANISLAUS COLLEGE FARM COMPLEX AS A SITE FOR A RENEWABLE ENERGY PILOT PROJECT

Fitzgerald Yaw Jr

November 04, 2007

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Farmer to Farmer (FTF) program of Partners of the Americas has been operating in Guyana since the early nineties and has made an impact on agricultural development in Guyana through a variety of programs initiated by Guyanese and implemented in conjunction with specialist volunteers. These volunteer spend time in Guyana working with Guyanese at the community level to implement projects in support of the overall Partners of the Americas philosophy which is that of community and economic development through people to people cooperation. Projects include the Guyana Dairy Development program and improvement of bee keeping and peanut cultivation just to give examples.

The assignment discussed in this report seeks to encourage sustainable economic and community development in Guyana by implementing a demonstration project to illustrate the utility of photovoltaic energy as a source of electrical power for Guyanese farmers and households. Work on this project had stared since 2003 and this trip had as its key goal getting the base information needed to get solar power installed and in use at the St. Stanislaus College Farm Complex (SSCF). In this regard this was a very successful trip. I met some key individuals as detailed in the full report and received important offers of assistance.

The first priority is to revise the project document to reflect what was learnt on this trip. Following this we will be contacting individuals and organization in the USA and Guyana, encouraging and prodding those who have offered to assist to act on their commitments. We expect to see solar power being used to provide electrical power at the SSCF before the end of 2008.

BACKGROUND

The September 2007assignment in Guyana to assess the SSCF as a site for a renewable energy pilot project is the latest stage in a process which started since at least 2003. The author is doing research and work on sustainable tourism and renewable energy and had initiated discussion of the SSCF as an agri-tourism site. Over time in relation to the SSCF the author had switched focus from the overall agri-tourism potential of the complex to an emphasis on the renewable energy option for the farm. This changed focus is linked mainly to the work the author is doing on renewable energy, especially in relation to taking advantage of the net metering laws in the Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York region.
