Renewable Energy Project Vies For JIE Project of the Year

Four major local companies have been nominated for the prestigious Jamaica Institute of Engineers 2009 Project of the Year Award. One of those projects is renewable energy based.

The four projects are:

  1. The Caribbean Cement Company KILN 5 Project
  2. The Kingston Metropolitan Area Sewerage & Wastewater Treatment Project
  3. The Norman Manley International Airport, Terminal Expansion Programme
  4. The Jamaica Broilers Ethanol Plant Phase III

The Jamaica Broilers Ethanol Plant Phase III in Port Esquivel, St. Catherine, features a 60 million gallon per year Ethanol Dehydration plant and 10 million gallon storage facility which has placed Jamaica as the second largest exporter of fuel grade ethanol to the U.S.A. With the potential to earn significant foreign exchange for Jamaica, the preoject created in excess of 300 construction jobs and 50 permanent jobs. Overall cost of the project was US$16M.

The Jamaica Institution of Engineers (JIE) Annual Awards Banquet at the Jamaica Pegasus is set for Saturday, November 28, 2009.
