Public-Private Partnerships Could Help Renewable Energy Development in the Caribbean

In a recent opinion article, Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) are discussed as an effective way to increase investment in countries in the Caribbean and assist in developing the country´s infrastructure.

“In the energy sector, Jamaica has made impressive gains in procuring new sources of renewable energy (RE) and is well placed to meet its target of 12.5 per cent of installed generating capacity by 2015.”

This does not apply to Jamaica alone, “other Caribbean countries are looking to the private sector to provide the money and management needed to improve the region’s inadequate infrastructure services.”

This is great news to develop renewable energy resources in the Caribbean, to improve the power grids, reduce the cost of electricity and reduce the carbon print. Geothermal, which has a significant potential in the area can greatly benefit from said PPP agreements.
