Productive sector urged to look to renewable energy

Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce, Hon. Karl Samuda, is encouraging the Wisynco Group Limited and other stakeholders in the productive sector to explore the use of renewable energies in an effort to reduce their electricity bills.

This, he noted, would tie in with efforts being made by the Government to promote the use of alternate energy in order to lessen the country’s dependence on fossil fuel.

The Minister was speaking at a press conference on Friday (January 14), following a tour of the Wisynco’s manufacturing plant in White Marl, St. Catherine.

“On the tour, what struck me was the dependence on electricity and your source of electricity is the JPS (Jamaica Public Service). I would like to suggest that one of the next projects that you might want to look at is the promotion of alternate energy that could in some way replace even a percentage of the electricity that you have to rely on through the JPS,” Mr. Samuda said.

The tour forms part of a programme of factory tours initiated by Minister Samuda to underscore Government’s support for the sector and encourage investments.

Some of the areas toured at Wisynco’s manufacturing plant included the beverage and foam divisions, filler area, and water treatment plant.
