Paulwell: Several private companies embracing renewable energy

Minister of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining Phillip Paulwell says several private sector companies have been taking up his invitation to join the renewable energy ‘revolution’.

In an interview with JIS News, Paulwell said that apart from the 1,600-kilowatt solar energy installation at the Grand Palladium Hotel in Hanover, several other companies have come on board with some now operating completely off the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPSCo) grid.

“The news is still very positive. I also toured Mystic Mountain (in St Ann) and they are completely off the grid. They are utilising both wind and solar,” he noted.

Companies, he said, continue to buy into the idea of taking steps to lower the energy cost, which is a major part of the objective.

“What we are saying to people is … it’s really in your hands, you can substantially lower the cost of energy, and renewable is really growing in Jamaica,” he added.

The minister said Jamaica is far ahead of its English-speaking Caribbean counterparts, in terms of the capacity for renewable energy installation and expansion.

“Next year we are going to be bringing on 150 megawatts of new capacity,” Paulwell noted.
