Over 90 Applicants From Nine Caribbean Countries in IDEAS Energy Innovation Contest

Over 1000 applications have been received for the IDEAS Energy Innovation Contest sponsored by GVEP International, the Inter American Development Bank (IDB), GTZ and the Korean Government. Applications have been sent in from every Latin American country (988) and from nine Caribbean countries (94).

Applications from the Caribbean Dominican Republic 32%, Jamaica 30%, Haiti 20%.

A considerable communications campaign organised by all the co-sponsors supported the launching of the contest. Press launches were held in more than ten countries, and information was sent out by country focal points to universities, municipalities and local organizations.

‘’Access to energy is rapidly climbing up the political and business agenda in Latin America and the Caribbean, and simultaneously entering the social consciousness,’’ remarked Pedro Gamio, GVEP International Regional Manager. “There are many people with bright ideas, they are just lacking the means to put them into action.” This contest, designed to support innovative approaches to access to energy, renewable energy and energy efficiency, aims to tackle that problem, and to develop economically viable solutions which can then be directly implemented on the ground.

The applications cover a wide range of subjects from the introduction of electric taxis in urban areas, developing new forms of bioreactors to capture CO2, new methods for harnessing wave power, energy efficiency in the use of radio towers to new uses for social networking tools to provide information on energy consumption and demand side management.
Bioenergy has taken the lead amongst the ideas for innovation, closely followed by solar, and then a roughly equal representation of hydropower and energy efficiency. There have been relatively few applications for Wind power and research projects made up the smallest group.

With such variety, the prospects have everyone at GVEP International and all involved in the competition very excited!
