Montserrat’s energy efficiency being assessed

BRADES, Montserrat (GIU) — The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) is presently conducting an audit of the energy efficiency of all member states. Vincent David, Senior Energy Economist from Econoler of Canada visited Montserrat this week to review the island’s energy efficiency.

Econoler has been contracted to develop a strategic framework for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the energy sector at the regional level. On Monday, David met with various government and private sector stakeholders to discuss the audit and to gather available data.

The study, which is being funded by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), aims to look at the main consumers of energy in each territory, best practices from across the region and evaluating energy efficiency methods and the use of renewable energy.

He explained that the national objectives for increased energy efficiency include job creation, energy security and the spin off effects on a macroeconomic level.

David will be reviewing Montserrat’s Census Data to collect data on the numbers and types of household appliances in the residential sector and also light usage among other things.

The energy economist said the report should be available at the end of March 2013 and will also look at the transport sector and their use of energy.
