Looking for new energy sources in Cuba

With the aim of replacing petroleum as an energy source, since it is an exhaustible resource, Cuba studies are underway to search for renewable sources. Specifically, the Center for Biogas and Environmental Engineering, located in Sancti Spiritus, is developing physical examinations, chemical and microbiological using forest waste, industrial, agricultural and animals.

According to preliminary studies and on an annual calculation, there are possibilities to replace the use of some 4 000 tonnes of fuel in the country.

Medinella Fernando, President of Cubasolar, a nongovernmental organization that promotes renewable energy and install solar systems and conducts research in this field, said there is great potential to produce biogas from pig feces.

The report states that more than 1,200 facilities contribute to energy saving efforts in the province, including windmills, gas digesters, micro-hydro plants and solar panels.
