Jamaica to access regional nuclear science agreement

Jamaica moved a step closer to accessing the Regional Co-operative Agreement for the Advancement of Nuclear Science and Technology in Latin America and the Caribbean (ARCAL), following Cabinet approval yesterday.

This was announced by Minister with responsibility for Information, Telecommunications and Special Projects, Hon. Daryl Vaz, at a Post Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House.

He said that ARCAL was established in 1984, as the Regional Cooperative Arrangement for the Promotion of Nuclear Science and Technology in Latin America, and was made a formal inter-governmental cooperation agreement in 1998.

“The objectives of ARCAL are to, inter alia, promote and coordinate cooperation activities for training, research, development and applications of nuclear science and technology in Latin America and the Caribbean region,” he said.

He noted that ARCAL falls under the technical co-operation programme of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which helps to transfer nuclear and related technologies for peaceful uses to countries throughout the world.

The agreement will eventually be tabled in Parliament for its approval.
