International Conference on Technology Transfer and Renewable Energy 2012

Mauritius, 21 – 22 June 2012

Call for papers

Renewable energy is of great relevance for the socio-economic development of developing countries as a whole and for countries of the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) region (especially in small island developing states) in particular. It is also very relevant to regions such as Europe, a region where significant technological developments are taking place.

Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are to date heavily depend on (imported) fossil fuels to meet their energy needs. Apart from the environmental benefits and the fact that it concretely contributes to mitigate climate change, the local generation and use of renewable energies offer a great potential for local economic development (e.g. a wide range of local job opportunities from high-skill to low-skill and from high-tech to agriculture) It may also foster local investments and reduce the need for expensive fuel imports.

Despite this favorable background, the renewable energy sector cannot develop appropriately at present, due partly to lack expertise and also as a result of limited access to the latest technologies and knowledge, especially in ACP Small Island Developing States (ACP-SIDS). In this context, the International Conference on Technology Transfer and Renewable Energy is being held under the Small Developing Island Renewable Energy Knowledge and Technology Transfer Network (DIREKT) Project is being held.

Aims of the Conference

The aims of the International Conference on Technology Transfer and Renewable Energy are:

  • To provide universities of ACP countries and other areas with an opportunity to display and present their work on renewable energy;
  • To promote the exchange of information, ideas and experiences acquired in the execution of projects and technology transfer activities on renewable energy;
  • To discuss methodological approaches and projects which aim at integrating the topic of sustainable and renewable energy in support of national projects and in the implementation of renewable energy action plans.

Profile of Participants

Delegates attending the International Conference on Technology Transfer and Renewable Energy will come from a cross-sectoral range of areas. They are:

  • members of university administrations;
  • teaching staff
  • research staff;
  • student groups;
  • project officers and consultants;
  • other people interested in the field.

It is believed that this wide range of participants will help to outline the need for integrated approaches towards technology transfer in renewable energy in ACP countries and help them to achieve their commitments towards sustainable development.
