Kingston, Jamaica — The Government is set to procure another 100 megawatt of renewable energy.

This is the word from Energy Minister, Dr Andrew Wheatley, who made the announcement during his contribution to the Sectoral Debate in Parliament today.

Minister Wheatley revealed that the Government will issue the Request for Proposal (RFP), once the Eight Rivers Licence is completed.

The Eight Rivers Energy Company is to supply 33MW of solar energy to the grid at at US eight and a half cents per kWh. This project is located in Negril, Westmoreland, and will have an investment of US$50 million.

Additionally, the Eight Rivers Project is expected to employ approximately 200 people during construction and some 50 permanent employees.

Construction is slated to start in 2016/2017 and the first supply to the grid will be in 2018.

These projects will join the other major renewable projects of Content Solar, BMR and the recently commissioned Wigton III, which will together add over 80MW of renewables to the energy mix.

These initiatives, Minister Wheatley said, put Jamaica on track for “having 15 per cent renewable capacity to the grid for 2020”.

“These are key moves towards the diversified energy mix and a competitive supply to deliver 30 per cent of the generation to the grid from renewables by 2030,” the energy minister said.
