Gestamp Solar inaugurates 5MW Puerto Rico PV plant

Spanish PV plant developer and operator Gestamp Solar has inaugurated a 5MW solar power installation at the Puerto Rico Convention Center, Puerto Rico.

The inauguration event late last month was attended by dignitaries including the governor of Puerto Rico Alejandro García Padilla and Victor Suarez, head of the Puerto Rican port authority.

The convention centre is the largest in the Caribbean and now features 17,000 solar panels over car parking spaces and 2,000 panels on the main roof of the building. The 5MW plant will generate around 8,000MWh of electricity annually.

Construction of the plant took eight months and required around US$20 million of investment. Around 125 jobs were created during construction along with 25 permanent maintenance roles. Gestamp Solar is the photovoltaic division of Gestamp Renewables, itself a subsidiary of steel company Corporacion Gestamp.

Puerto Rico’s PV industry entered the news recently when government-owned electric power company, Autoridad de Energia Electrica (AEE), announced a set of energy storage requirements for future renewable energy projects, as part of an ambitious plan to incorporate a further 600MW of renewables onto the grid in 2014.
