German Ambassador hosts energy workshop participants in Trinidad

Renewable energies and energy efficiency were the subjects of the workshop that was organised by the Department of Physics, UWI, supported by the University of Flensberg through the German Academic Exchange Service held at UWI from January 17 to 19.

Participants had come from as far away as Ghana, Rwanda and Bangladesh, New Zealand, Germany and, of course Trinidad and Tobago.

With the vulnerability of Caribbean island states to climate change and global warming and the need for the efficient use of energy as well as the development of alternative sources of energy, discussions centred on wind, water and solar power as well as geothermal power.

Since 2003 the German government, has provided funds for the Caribbean Renewable Energy Development Programme (CREDP) to the tune of 7.45 million Euros and, recently, an additional 4.5 million Euros. To complete their discussions on wind, water and solar power, and geothermal sources of energy – and to relax, German Ambassador Stefan Schlüter held a reception in his residence in Ellerslie Park for those attending the workshop.
