Dominican Republic Inaugurates First Biomass Plant To National Grid

The government of the Dominican Republic has inaugurated a 30MW biomass plant, the first one connected to the country’s National Interconnected Electric System (SENI).

The San Pedro BioEnergy co-generation plant uses sugarcane bagasse as feedstock, and its construction was carried out by Spain’s Cobra Group over a period of two years.

Empresa Generadora de Electricidad Haina (EGE Haina) will control and operate the facility.

The $90 million (€79.4m) plant is capable of offsetting more than 80,000 tonnes of CO2emissions per year, the government said.

It is in the final process of certification for the United Nations Certified Emission Reductions (CERs).
