September 13 (Renewables Now) – The 34-MW Matafongo onshore wind farm in the Dominican Republic started operations on Thursday, the office of the country’s president Danilo Medina announced.

Grupo Eolico Dominicano SA developed the 17-turbine park, with contributions from Spain-based Genera Avante SL, on an approximately USD-71-million (EUR 64m) investment, according to the president’s website. Local lenders Banco Popular Dominicano and Banco del Progreso provided the financing.

The Caribbean country expects to produce 25% of its power from clean sources in 2019 and end the year with 604.6 MW of renewable energy capacity, excluding hydropower.

Three new wind farms, the 50-MW Guanillo, the 48.3-MW Guzmancito and the 46-MW Puerto Plata-Imbert, are up for commissioning by the end of December. The Dominican Republic will also see new photovoltaic (PV) parks, the 25-MW Solar Canoa and the 50-MW Washington Capital, put into service by the year’s end.
