Dominica Completes Drilling of Geothermal Wells

Imagen activaDominica”s government said the drilling of wells to produce geothermal energy has been completed, a project which is expected to bring economic benefits to the country.

According Energy Minister Rayburn Blackmoore the initial phase of the process has been completed and added that the next phase involves shutting down the wells for a twelve week period to monitor progress on the generation of heat.

Blackmoore explained that “to generate energy you need to have a minimum of 180 degrees Celsius based on the reviews we have gotten thus far, it is above 235 degrees. I think that this is tremendous for us going forward”.

Dominica has allocated more than $11 million for the the exploitation of its geothermal potential.

“We have said to Dominican people that we want to first of all commission a small plant between 10 to 15 megawatts so that the people of Dominica can benefit from that resource”, as we reduce electricity costs, Blackmoore added.

Blackmoore recalled that Dominica was ranked first for geothermal development in the Caribbean at the last Caribbean Renewable Energy Forum in Aruba.
