Cuba seeking more renewable energy projects

Increasing its call to foreign investors to participate in renewable-energy projects on the island, the Cuban government upped its plans with five biomass, wood, solar and wind energy projects, the Asociación de Empresarios Europea Hispano Lusa Cubana first reported.

The government will announce the new projects during the 12th Worldwide Conference of Wind and Renewable Energy, which will be held this June in Havana, the recently founded trade association said on its Facebook page. No details were immediately available.

The conference is titled “Opening the Doors to Caribbean Winds.”

Cuban Chamber of Commerce officials made the announcement during a meeting with Italian businesspeople in Havana this month.

In an ambitious plan, as of last year the government planned installation of eight new wind farms by 2020 in central and eastern Cuba, for a total capacity of 280 megawatts. Currently four wind parks, using Chinese, Spanish and French technology, generate 11.7 megawatts.
