Cuba Increases Use of Renewable Energy

renewableCuba grew by four percent the use of renewable energy in its economy during 2011, compared with 2010, according to data from the National Statistics Office.

Thanks to that growth, those energy carriers contributed to 21.6 of the total primary energy used in the nation by late 2011, according to Granma newspaper.

Among the most used sources is biomass, among it that from sugar industry, and hydroelectric plants, the daily noted.

The use of wind energy also increases in many variants, while the use of solar heaters grew by 42 percent compared with 2010, the publication stated.

Despite these advances, the potential for energy savings through the use of renewable sources in Cuba have yet to be exhausted, not only in the business, but also in the residential sector, Granma stated.
