Cuba Builds Seven Photovoltaic Parks

Seven photovoltaic plants are under construction in Cuba as part of the national development agenda towards energy saving, Aleisly Valdés Viera, director of Energy Generation with Renewable Sources in the Electrical Union (UNE by its Spanish acronym), announced.

Valdes Viera said that the seven facilities will have a total capacity of 8.15 megawatts, but conditions will be prepared to get up to 11 megawatts, which is the full extent of this type of technology.
Each megawatt installed in Cuba can produce on average 1.5 gigawatts / hour in a year, saving the country 430 tons of fuel in 12 months, the specialist noted, quoted by Granma newspaper.
He recalled that since 2013 another seven photovoltaic farms operate in the country, located in Santa Clara, Guáimaro, Santiago de Cuba, Guantanamo, Isla de la Juventud and Cienfuegos provinces, facilities which were executed with 60 percent share of domestic industry.
The low agricultural value of the chosen area, its proximity to areas of high energy consumption and the position of the sun to orient the panels are among the criteria to be considered for the location of photovoltaic plants in Cuba.
