CARILEC & JPS to hold renewable energy workshop in Jamaica

The Caribbean Electric Utility Services Cooperation (CARILEC), in association with the Jamaica Public Service Company Limited (JPS), will be hosting two workshops on renewable energy technologies and generation dispatch optimization in Kingston between May 7 and 11.

The main objectives of the workshops are to train and build the capacity of participants as it relates to renewable energy developments and generation dispatch optimization techniques, according to a statement issued through the JPS.

The renewable energy technologies workshop will bring the participants up to date on the fundamental aspects of renewable energy initiatives.

Participants will also discuss renewable energy market developments, highlight the required regulatory and economic policies, and examine the requirements for interconnecting renewable energy to the electricity grid.

The generation dispatch optimization workshop will furnish the participants with knowledge of different power generation technologies, provide an overview of planning criteria for power generation dispatching, and facilitate an appreciation of best practices as it relates to power generation dispatching.

The workshops are being conducted as part of the capacity building component of the energy efficiency and renewable energy project for CARILEC.

The project, which began in 2009, is funded by the Inter-American Development Bank and is being implemented over a three-year period.

It is geared towards enhancing CARILEC’s capability to assist its members in improving their efficiencies and promoting the use of renewable energy technologies and alternative fuels in the Caribbean region.

CARILEC is an association of Caribbean electric utilities. The corporation promotes training, information sharing and the promotion of programmes that advance the safe and efficient production, transmission, distribution and utilization of electricity.
