CARICOM collaborating to develop renewable energy sector

Countries of the Caribbean region are this Energy Week 2012 collaborating on lessons learned and the way forward in the renewable energy sector.

Barbados’ Energy Week coincides with that of many other Caribbean countries, transforming this week into CARICOM Energy Week. Speaking at the opening of the Week here in Barbados at the Hilton on Monday, Minister with responsibility for Energy and Telecommunications, Sen-ator Darcy Boyce said that Barbados is playing its part in the region’s approach to renewable energy.

“As we celebrate Energy Week 2012, we in CARICOM are sharing experiences in developing our renewable energy, learning from each other’s performance, adopting best practices followed by each other and helping each other in our quest to develop sustainable energy sectors. We in Barbados are playing our part in these efforts to ensure a region wide approach to dealing with energy as an engine of our economies,” Boyce stated.

As for the stage of development in the renewable energy sector in the Caribbean, the Energy Minister said that a lot of ground still has to be covered and the countries of CARICOM must assist each other along the way.

“We are making progress each year; and the rate at which we move forward seems to be increasing year by year. But we still have a far way to go and we must all help each other as we go forward, step by step, on this long and challenging road to a brighter, more sustainable energy future,” Boyce said. (AN)
