Caribbean Islands Taking Steps To Shift From Diesel To Solar

The inauguration of the 3-MWp sun2live solar power plant at the V.C. Bird International Airport of Antigua represented the conclusion of the first major step of a successful shift from a diesel to a solar-based energy supply in the Caribbean. With the installation of further sun2live and sun2roof solar power generating and storage solutions across Antigua and Barbuda, this process is continuing now.

PVEnergy-sun2goxl-Cecilias-Restaurant-Antigua2To ensure the lighting and auxiliary power in the Helios inverter stations, which belong to the recently completed 3-MWp sun2live solar power plant at the airport, the central energy management system system sun2safe will be commissioned in the course of the next few days. This all-in-one  power management, converter/inverter and energy storage unit has a nominal power of 10 kWp and will be connected with solar panels placed directly on the area of the 3-MWp sun2live plant. With its monitoring capabilities sun2safe is an environment friendly energy management, conversion and storage system enabling energy and thereby cost savings.

Just like the sun2safe the solar storage solution sun2go xl is part of the product range of the clean power provider PV Energy, which is in charge of the realisation of the clean energy projects across the twin islands. The recent implementation of a sun2go xl at the Beach House Hotel on Barbuda shows how private investors follow the clean energy approach of the government. The hotel is currently under construction and the produced power is being used for the refurbishment works. The mobile unit has a nominal capacity of 1,4 kWp, allowing to generate enough power from the sun to provide the lighting in the building and to operate all the necessary power tools during construction.

Another sun2go xl has been installed at Cecilia’s – a beach restaurant in the northern part of Antigua. With a nominal capacity of 1.4 kWp this mobile unit, positioned at the eastern side of the restaurants’ yard, covers up to 27 per cent of the daily energy demand. The produced energy is utilized for powering the kitchenware such as ice makers and other devices. “More and more private investors seize the opportunity to benefit from the sun as a reliable, endless and eco-friendly energy source”, states Mr. Alanzo Jack, Electrical Engineer of PV Energy Limited. “Not only the endeavours of the local government but also the efforts of private entrepreneurs accord Antigua and Barbuda a true pioneering role in the whole of the region.”
