Barbados Agrofest organisers get thumbs up for renewable energy theme

The Rural Development Commission (RDC) is delighted with this year’s renewable energy theme for Agrofest 2012.

This from public relations officer with the RDC, Wendy Burke who addressed the media at the Commission’s townhall meeting held at the Speighstown Community Centre last Tuesday.

The national agricultural exhibition, which takes place at Queen’s Park and the Weymouth B grounds from Friday, February 24 to Sunday, February 26, will for the first time, allow patrons to witness a demonstration of a solar-powered hydroponic system which, according to Burke, coincides with the Agrofest 2012 theme, displaying the fusion between the agriculture and renewable energy industries.

She stated, “This year we are thrilled to know that with the theme, “renewable energy powering agriculture to success” we have been able to partner with a solar company and one of our exhibitors, Steven Whittaker is doing a hydroponic system which will show how solar energy can power this system for growth through special lighting among other things”.

The company, Solar Energy Innovations Inc, is one of 83 exhibitors sponsored by the Commission as well as one from an over 250 exhibitors for the overall exhibition which will feature cooking demonstrations, a petting zoo, farmers market and exhibitions by the Barbados Horticultural Society among many others.

Burke urged to public to come out to the exhibition and witness the hydroponic system as well as other booths first-hand. She noted that while the system was unconventional, it spoke to the ability of persons, with limited land space, to still have the capacity to grow their own produce and to utilise all of the natural resources available to them.
