APPLICATION: Solar Stills/ Water Distillation or Desalination

DESCRIPTION:  Where water quality is poor, due to either high salinity or contamination with biological organisms, water distillation can be used to provide water suitable for drinking and cooking. In this process solar stills are used to purify water. Solar stills are essentially flat plate collectors through which water passes openly into grooves. The technology is similar to that used in water heating except that the collector plate is slanted at a angle towards a channel which leads into a pipe. As the internal temperature of the collector rises, water molecules from the solution to be purified gain heat energy, allowing them to evaporate. Distilled (purified) water droplets condense on the internal side of transparent collector plate or cover and are channeled into the pipe which collects the distilled water.
