An Intellectual Dialogue

 

The Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE) was invited to showcase its various products and projects to the University’s staff and students. The occasion was used to build public awareness and educate the public about OLADE, the training opportunities provided, and the role it plays in the development of Jamaica’s and the region’s energy sector.

OLADE’s products comprise Regional Energy Databases for Legal, Economic and Statistical Information, in addition to SUPER, an electricity planning model used for design of expanding electricity generation and transmission systems. Projects include the Regional Energy Efficiency Programme (PALCEE), involving partnership with Jamaica, Grenada, El Salvador and Nicaragua. Training opportunities include internships with OLADE, and virtual courses on energy and environmental management, ranging from traditional hydrocarbon and renewable energy sources.

 

These products and activities are in keeping with OLADE’s Mission:  

 

“To contribute to the integration, sustainable development and energy security in the region, advising and promoting cooperation and coordination among its member countries”

The University of Technology Jamaica is one of the island’s premier tertiary institutions, specializing in the practical preparation of students at the Bachelors and Graduate levels, in the areas of Energy Management, Computing, Built Environment, Health, Business and Sports.

The University’s Research and Technology Day is an annual event, geared towards publicizing the work of each faculty of the University. It highlights the strides being made in research and development, and also serves as a showcase for students to become more acquainted with their areas of interest.
